FSSAI ( FOOD SAFETY AND STANDARDS AUTHORITIES OF INDIA )

The Food Safety and Norms Act, 2006 (FSSAI Act) established the FSSAI, which is a consolidated statute pertaining to food safety and regulation in India. It ensures that food products are subjected to quality checks, hence preventing food adulteration and the sale of substandard products. It is in charge of registering and licensing Food Business Drivers (FBO) in India, as well as establishing the norms and regulations for conducting food business in India. Every food business driver involved in the manufacture, processing, storage, distribution, and trading of food items is required to obtain an FSSAI Registration or License.

    FSSAI Basic Registration

Food Business Operators with a yearly revenue of less than Rs.12 lakh must obtain FSSAI basic registration. Form A is the FSSAI registration form that the applicant must complete in order to receive FSSAI basic registration.
Businesses must fulfill certain requirements outlined by the FSSAI in order to register for a basic food license in India. Small-scale food businesses can register using the simple form.

    FSSAI State License

The FSSAI State License is mandatory for Food Business Operators (FBOs) whose annual turnover falls between Rs. 12 lakh and Rs. 20 crore. To obtain this license, FBOs are required to complete Form B, the designated FSSAI registration form.
This license is essential for various types of businesses, including manufacturing units with a daily capacity of 2 metric tons, dairy units handling up to 5000 liters per day, 3-star hotels and establishments of higher ratings, repackers, relabelling units, clubs, canteens, and all catering businesses, regardless of their turnover.

    FSSAI Central License

The FSSAI Central License is a mandatory requirement for Food Business Operators (FBOs) with an annual turnover exceeding Rs. 20 crore. To obtain this license, FBOs must complete Form B, which is the designated FSSAI registration form.
This central license is essential for businesses with a high turnover and those operating in two or more states. Additionally, all importers and exporters of food products are required to apply for this license.
The FSSAI central license has a tenure ranging from a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 5 years. Compliance with these regulations ensures that businesses with significant operations maintain food safety and quality standards, and it also facilitates the monitoring of import and export activities related to food products.

    FSSAI License for Cloud Kitchen

FSSAI Licensing for Cloud Kitchens follows a structured framework based on the annual turnover of the business. When the annual turnover is below Rs. 12 lakh, cloud kitchens are required to apply for FSSAI Basic Registration using Form A. If their annual turnover falls between Rs. 12 lakh and Rs. 20 crore, they should obtain the FSSAI State License by submitting Form B. When the annual turnover exceeds Rs. 20 crore, cloud kitchens must secure the FSSAI Central License, also through the submission of Form B. This systematic approach ensures that cloud kitchens adhere to food safety and quality standards in accordance with their financial scale.
